Tips for Using Icebreakers

There are several things to keep in mind when preparing an opening icebreaker or game. First of all, the word "icebreaker" itself might cause unnecessary anxiety or fear among your participants. Like many things in life, this is one of those things that sounds worse than it actually is. And ultimately, after it's all said and done, this activity or game should make your group feel more comfortable with each other and warm them up for your meeting (in a non-threatening way).

Tips for using these games, activities, and questions:

  • Try referring to the "icebreaker" using terminology that might make them more comfortable. For example, if you are providing a schedule for participants, list the activity as "Warm Up" or use the name of the icebreaker, i.e. "Name that
